AI Programs for High School and Middle School Students
Every program ends with something the student made.
AI Scholars
Learn Python, machine learning and modern AI from the ground up, then build a group research project with 3–4 peers.
Grades 9–12 · No experience needed · 10 weeks
AI Fellowship
An independent AI research project, 1-on-1 with a mentor, ending in a submission to a research journal or competition.
Grades 9–12 · Python basics or completed AI Scholars · 12 weeks
AI Accelerator
Our most advanced track — an independent research paper submitted to a college-level journal or a national competition.
Grades 9–12 · Advanced · Self-paced, accessible on your own schedule
Combination
AI Scholars and the AI Fellowship in one track — learn the fundamentals, then go straight into a 1-on-1 independent project.

Deep Dive: AI + Medicine
Build models for diagnosis, medical imaging and genomics alongside a mentor working in the field.

CLIMATE
Forecasting Harmful Algal Blooms in Tampa Bay
Harmful algal blooms like Florida's Red Tide kill thousands of fish and endanger public health. Neel built an XGBoost model that forecasts chlorophyll-a — the key indicator of algal biomass — days in advance from water, weather, and prior bloom conditions, plus a Random Forest classifier that flags whether a bloom is coming.

HEALTHCARE
Detecting Lung Cancer in CT Scans with a CNN
Slow detection timelines let cancer develop before results come back. Srihari built a convolutional neural network that identifies non-small-cell lung cancer in patient CT scans, cutting the time it takes to flag a case for review.

FINANCE
Stock Prediction — and Honestly Measuring Whether It Works
Online claims of highly accurate AI stock prediction usually go untested. Quan forecast prices for the S&P 500, NVIDIA, and JPMorgan across five horizons, then built a rigorous evaluation framework — walk-forward backtesting, a one-year hindcast, and live paper trading — showing that most reported accuracy reflects market drift, not real forecasting skill.

How does our AI research program work?
Four stages, start to finish. Classes are online via Zoom.
STEP 1
Build the foundation
Python, machine learning and modern AI from the ground up. No prior experience required.
STEP 2
Find your question
Work with your mentor to scope a research question you care about — and one that's tractable in the time you have.
STEP 3
Build and train your model
1-on-1 troubleshooting as an idea turns into working code and defensible results.
STEP 4
Publish or present
Submit to a research journal or competition, or showcase the work publicly.
CREDIT PARTNERSHIP
Credit Partnership with the University of California, San Diego
Students who successfully complete a high school program are eligible for post-baccalaureate credit through University of California, San Diego Extended Studies.

AI Scholars, AI Fellowship and the Deep Dive programs are open to students in grades 9–12. AI Trailblazers is for grades 6–8. No prior experience is required for AI Scholars or AI Trailblazers.

Program lengths vary: AI Scholars and all Deep Dives run 25 hours over 10 weeks (or a 2-week intensive). AI Accelerator runs 25 hours over 10 weeks. AI Fellowship runs 12–15 weeks. The Combination program follows the AI Scholars timeline followed directly by the AI Fellowship timeline. AI Trailblazers runs 25 hours over 10 weeks (or a 2-week intensive).
